The Christian Council of Ghana has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to as a matter of urgency come out with a clear statement on the state of constituencies that have challenges with results declared in the December 7, 2020 elections.
The Council says it is also concerned that the government has been quiet about the unfortunate killings that took place in certain constituencies during the elections and admonishes government to ensure the investigation of the killings and bring culprits to book.
The police have announced that five persons died from election-related violence and gunshots, while many others were injured.
In a statement issued Tuesday calling for peace, the Christian Council said it was deeply concerned about the tensions that have trailed the declaration of the presidential results by the EC and was therefore working to engage all stakeholders to ensure that the country’s peace is not compromised.
The Council, while calling on all Ghanaians to remain calm and join the Council to continue to pray for peace for the country, also said it has identified a number of issues as needing urgent action to ensure lasting peace.
- We call on the EC to as a matter of urgency come out with a clear statement on the state of the constituencies that have challenges with the election results.
- We are concerned that the government has been quiet about the unfortunate killings that took place in certain constituencies during the Elections. We admonish the government to ensure the investigation of the killings and bring the culprits to book.
- We appeal to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid statements that have the tendency to inflame passion and cause mayhem in the country. We entreat them to desist from the street protests and agitations and rather resort to the court to seek redress for their concerns in accordance with the law.
- We appeal to the support groups of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be temperate in their discourses especially in the media.
- We call on the security agencies to be professional in the exercise of their duties concerning the Election related issues.
- We admonish Christian politicians to ensure that they bring their faith values of love and peace to bear and uphold the name of Jesus Christ who is the Prince of Peace.
